What is Lonely Beach Like?
Originally known by locals as Hat Ta Nam Lonely Beach was given its English title by an enterprising resort owner and now that’s what everyone calls it. So does it live up to its name? Well kind of. Lonely Beach developed as a backpacker’s haven and whilst it certainly has more to offer than that these days it is still the first stop for many travellers. Having said that there are also an increasing number of upscale places to stay. There is less infrastructure here than at the more northerly beaches but there is still plenty to do and indeed there are lots of restaurants and bars and a party scene that is probably the liveliest on Koh Chang.
The beach itself isn’t the longest on the island but it makes up for that by being extremely pretty. A thick strip of sand stretches for a few hundred metres and then gives way to pebbles at the Southern end where a mountain stream flows into the sea. There are only four or five resorts actually beside the beach and no development at all on this part of the road so it is possible to get that feeling of being away from it all.
However as you follow the road over the little bridge to the south of the beach you hit the Lonely Beach village. There is a cluster of bungalows, businesses, bars and restaurants that runs along the main road and down a couple of side roads both to the left and right. There are a couple of minimarts and lots of little shops. There are ATM’s but no bank or foreign exchange places.
Lots of restaurants put out a huge variety of food and drink, often at budget rates. There is an excellent Mexican restaurant as well as places offering good pizzas, western breakfasts and, of course that backpackers staple – the banana pancake.
Places to Stay in Lonely Beach
4 Star and Below
Siam Beach Resort is the first place that you come to as you descend the super-steep hill into Lonely Beach. You will notice some bungalows on the hill with killer views. These are now accompanied by some two-story beachside hotel rooms and they have a nice swimming pool adorned with dolphin sculpures.
Warapura Resort is a good mid-range option that has a waterfront rather than beachfront location – being situated just off to the south of Lonely beach proper. But there’s a good pool and all of the rooms are nicely equipped with big flat-screen TV etc.
Bhumiyama Beach Resort is situated right in the middle of Lonely Beach is perhaps the most high end resort on the beach with facilities and prices to match.
Exotic Bungalows is a recently completed mid-range place right in the heart of Lonely Beach village. There are individual air-conditioned bungalows with free wi-fi and they also have a swimming pool.
Two other good mid-range options are Little Eden – a friendly hillside backpacker place, and Lonely Beach Resort who have garden bungalows beside a swimming pool.
