Bang Bao Beach

Bang Bao Beach & Village

What is Bang Bao Like?

Bang Bao is an old fishing village that has now largely been redeveloped for visitors to Koh Chang. It has spread out on a long pier that juts out into a large bay and which has now sprouted any number of side arms and sub-piers. There are lots of shops selling everything from T-shirts, paintings and sunglasses to fresh fish and the pungent but precious locally made “Nam-Prik” fish paste – definitely an acquired taste. There are also some excellent seafood restaurants here that come into their own as the sun sets over the bay. The pier is also home to several dive shops, a police station, a health centre and of course the inevitable 7-Eleven store. Many of the island’s boat tours depart from here as well as ferries to Koh Mak, Koh Wai and Koh Kood. If you walk all the way to the end of the pier you will find an ornamental lighthouse that offers some great views to those that climb it.

Bang Bao doesn’t have any banks but there are several ATM’s at the start of the pier as well as a small post office. There are also a Temple and a school next to the main road at the turn off point to the pier.
Bang Bao Bay also has a nice beach called Khong Koi along its Eastern shore. The beach has two or three restaurants and beach bars and is a great place to lounge on the sand and enjoy the views out across the neighbouring islands to the south.

There are some good places to stay around Bang Bao. It is fun to stay over the water on the pier itself in one of several guesthouses and small resorts. There are also several resorts that encircle the waterfront of Bang Bao Bay that range from luxurious places like Nirvana to the backpacker friendly Bang Bao Cliff Cottages.

Places to Stay in Bang Bao

3 Star and Above

Nirvana Resort is one of Koh Chang’s best boutique hotels and is set on a huge section of the peninsula that forms Bang Bao Bay. They boast one of Koh Chang’s best restaurants in Tantra and a walk along the cliff-side boardwalk to witness sunset at their sundeck is a must do.

2 Star and Below

The Buddha View Guesthouse is in a great location close to the end of Bang Bao Pier. Staying over the water is a great experience and they also have a very popular restaurant.

Bang Bao Cliff Cottage is a great mid-range or backpacker option. A number of different bungalow styles are spread out on a hillside overlooking a scenic private bay.
